Can I Repair a Garage Door Myself?

Many garage door repairs may be relatively simple, but some are definitely not advisable for homeowners.  Here are some garage door repairs you can do yourself:garage door repair

 DIY Garage Door Repairs:

  • Dusty summers and wet winters can contribute to dirt build-up on your garage door parts, so clean tracks and moving parts with household cleaner and dry with a cloth.
  • Tighten all hardware, including garage door section hinges.
  • Check for dented tracks or broken rollers that could cause sticking.  You can gently pound out minor dents, but rusted or damaged tracks and broken rollers need to be replaced.
  • Lubricate tracks, rollers and pulleys with WD-40, then use household oil or silicone spray on rollers.  You don’t want your garage door to stick, especially during harsh winter weather.

 DIY Garage Door Opener Repairs:

Check the remote and keypad first.  If batteries are OK, one or both may need to be reprogrammed.

  • Close the garage door and disconnect opener, then perform checks and repairs outlined above.
  • Since the ‘90s, all garage doors have a photoelectric eye near the base to sense obstructions, but they don’t “see” anything higher up, so you can still close the door on your car.  Make sure eyes are pointed directly at one another, because misalignment could cause autoreverse to work incorrectly.

Regularly checking your garage door could save future trouble.  However, many older or lower quality models are not “user-friendly” when it comes to DIY garage door repairs.  Often, repairs or parts replacement can be dangerous or simply too time-consuming for the typical homeowner.  In general, a professional garage door company can do the work faster, better, and more safely.

If you live in the Denver area and want a professional company to service your garage door, give Overhead Door Company of Denver a try.
