What is R-value and how does it benefit me?

R-value is a standardized measurement of thermal efficiency. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating properties. Overhead Door manufactures insulated doors with a broad range of R-values designed to meet your needs. Our Thermacore® doors offer our highest R-values - up to 17.5.

I have a low ceiling in my garage. Will a garage door and opener work in my space?

Yes. A residential door requires a minimum of 4 ½” of headroom space. Your system will need a low headroom extension track or a low headroom torsion rear track. For a garage door opener you’ll need slightly more headroom, about 6 ½” minimum.

How can I get a new remote control for my opener?

We can provide you with a broad range of opener accessories from remote controls to wireless keypads. You will first need to determine if your opener is a newer model with CodeDodger® or an older model that does not have CodeDodger®. However, if your opener was manufactured before 1980, you have an analog type opener that we no longer carry remotes for and your system will need to be upgraded with a new receiver kit. We can provide you with one of these kits.

Why should I use a professional garage door dealer/installer?

A garage door is the largest moving object in your home and consists of a large number of small parts. We can install your door in a few hours and save you the time and frustration. In addition, when we professionally install your garage door, your door is covered by our warranties. When you install the garage door yourself, certain warranties may be voided.

What is steel gauge?

Steel gauge refers to the thickness (and strength) of the steel. When comparing strengths of steel, remember, the lower the gauge number, the thicker (and stronger) the steel.

Why should I choose an insulated door if my garage is not insulated?

A garage door opening is very large and even when closed can enable the transfer of heat or cold air into and out of your garage. If your garage is attached to your home, air in the garage can travel into the living space above or adjacent to the garage, providing unwanted heating or cooling effects. Check out the cost savings associated with insulated garage doors here (link to heat-loss study).

When I replace my existing door, can I keep my old track?

We recommend replacing your track when you replace your door. Replacing the track is relatively inexpensive and doing so ensures that the warranty of the garage door system remains valid. Unless requested by you, each of our garage door installations includes the installation of new track that is specific to your new garage door.

What type of spring is better...extension or torsion?

We recommend torsion springs on all new garage door installations. Torsion springs are typically located just above the top section of the door and are mounted to the header. They are wound springs and do not expand or contract when the door is moved. Extension springs are attached on either side of the door and stretch along the horizontal track when the door is closed. They typically offer less safety and balance than torsion springs.
